Research conducted at the University of Toronto has shown that supplementing a diet with daily probiotics can aid with symptoms of anxiety disorders in people who suffer from CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) . This study was conducted a group under the leadership of A. Venket Rao. It was based on a two month study , which showed a significant reduction in the subjects symptoms relating to anxiety .
Are you confused about the relationship between CFS and probiotics ? It appears that patients with CFS often also have digestive disorders and these are often associated with a reduction or near absence of good bacteria in the intestines which maintains control of populations of disease causing bacteria. That bad bacteria in the gut has already been linked with an increase in mood disorders and depression , and academics feel that the way we behave could be linked to bacteria levels . Probiotics supplements are naturally sourced live bacteria – including Lactobacillus or Bifidobacteria. Probiotic supplements help to ensure the balance with good bacterial or beneficial intestinal flora. One again it’s shown that intestinal health has far reaching overall health implications.
Chronic fatique syndrome and probiotics show that good health starts with good digestive health.
The team conduted their research on subjects afflicted with CFS – Chronic fatigue syndrome, a disease that has many many symptoms, including persistent fatigue- and for almost half of those affected – sleep disturbances, depression and anxiety . Probiotics were indicated as a possible approach given the connection between CFS and digestive problems and the treatment showed that after only sixty days of daily probiotics supplementation , the patients in the study showed positive results in dealing with disorders such as anxiety and depression .
The group given probiotics each day had higher levels of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria and at the same time exhibted fewer signs of anxiety They also showed an improvement with their digestive issues, with a decrease in gas, inflammation and bloating The researchers have published their study in the journal -“BioMed Central”.
The results of this study could be great news for CFS sufferers with anxiety disorders and depression. Unlike the usual drugs , which can cause a host of unwanted side effects, probiotics could be a safe and easy alternative. “The findings are huge,” said study co-author Alison C. Bested, who went on to say the test particpants felt calmer and were coping better with their condition , slept better and feeling less anxious .
